Empyrean Series reading order including Threshing Day, spoiler-free

Deep-plum editorial background with overlaid reading-order headline text and an antique-gold route sculpture on the right, where one ivory path continues forwards and smaller lilac paths curve back to earlier waypoints.

For a spoiler-free first read, follow Fourth Wing with its three official bonus chapters, then continue to Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. Treat Threshing Day as optional companion material rather than Book Four; its safest precise placement can be confirmed after publication.

The clearest Empyrean Series reading order including Threshing Day has two separate paths: the continuing novels and the optional stories that revisit the world from other angles. First-time readers should begin with Fourth Wing, read the official Fourth Wing bonus chapters, then continue through Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. Threshing Day belongs beside that route, not in its main numbered line. It is a companion collection scheduled for 29 September 2026, not the novel that continues Violet and Xaden’s story after Onyx Storm. Until readers can assess the finished collection for references to later revelations, its safest provisional placement is after Onyx Storm. This distinction matters because the series makes controlled uncertainty part of the reading experience: what readers know, when they learn it and whose perspective supplies it all shape the story.

At a glance

  • The main narrative spine is Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, in that order.
  • Read the official Fourth Wing bonus chapters only after completing Fourth Wing.
  • Threshing Day is a thirteen-story companion collection, not Empyrean Book Four.
  • For a first read, place Threshing Day provisionally after Onyx Storm until its full contents can be checked.
  • Publication order best preserves the series’ intended release of information.

The spoiler-free route map

For a first journey through the Empyrean world, the recommended route is straightforward. The numbered novels form one continuous sequence, while the bonus chapters and Threshing Day sit alongside it as optional companion material. They can deepen the experience, but they should not interrupt the novels before the relevant groundwork has been laid.

Use this order if you want the least confusing and most spoiler-conscious path. The bonus chapters are inserted according to the novel they revisit, while Threshing Day remains outside the numbered sequence.

  • 1. Fourth Wing, Empyrean Book One
  • 2. Fourth Wing bonus chapters 9, 16 and 27, optional; read after finishing the entire novel
  • 3. Iron Flame, Empyrean Book Two
  • 4. Onyx Storm, Empyrean Book Three
  • 5. Threshing Day, optional companion collection; provisionally safest after Onyx Storm
  • 6. The currently untitled Book Four, the future continuation of the main story, not Threshing Day

Why publication order is the best first-time order

Publication order is more than a tidy default. Fourth Wing introduces Violet Sorrengail, Xaden Riorson, Basgiath War College and the rules readers initially need. Iron Flame is explicitly Book Two, and Onyx Storm is Book Three. Each continues the central narrative rather than retelling a completed part of it.

That progression protects the architecture of discovery. Violet enters a dangerous institution in which knowledge is unevenly distributed, motives are difficult to judge and official explanations cannot simply be accepted at face value. Readers are asked to interpret people and systems with the information available to her at that moment. Moving supplementary viewpoints too far forward risks answering questions before the main narrative wants them answered.

This is why a first read differs from a reread. On a reread, foreknowledge can make patterns and character choices more visible. On a first read, uncertainty is still active. Following the original sequence preserves that controlled uncertainty and allows trust, doubt and understanding to develop at the intended pace.

Where the Fourth Wing bonus chapters belong

Rebecca Yarros’s official bonus-content page lists additional Fourth Wing chapters numbered 9, 16 and 27. Although those numbers correspond to points within the novel, first-time readers should not stop at each matching chapter and switch versions. Finish Fourth Wing first, then read all three extras.

This placement avoids two problems. First, a bonus treatment of a familiar moment may rely on the reader understanding the complete shape of the original novel. Secondly, a different narrative lens changes the meaning of what has already been seen. Reading the original account first lets its tensions and uncertainties stand on their own; the extra perspective can then work as commentary rather than premature explanation.

The bonus chapters are therefore optional enrichment, not missing structural pieces. A reader who moves directly from Fourth Wing to Iron Flame will still be following the main series correctly. Anyone who enjoys comparing perception, intention and outward behaviour will gain the most from reading the extras while Fourth Wing remains fresh.

Threshing Day is not Book Four

The distinction is unusually clear: the official Threshing Day information describes it as a companion collection and expressly says it is not the continuation of Violet and Xaden’s story after Onyx Storm. It gathers thirteen stories from across the Empyrean, returning to the day riders were chosen. Xaden’s story is confirmed as one of them.

That premise makes Threshing Day retrospective rather than sequential. It returns to pivotal experiences belonging to multiple characters instead of advancing directly from the ending of the third novel. Its publication between Onyx Storm and Book Four does not turn it into the fourth instalment. Release position and narrative position are not the same thing.

Calling it “Book Four” would create the wrong expectation twice over: readers might anticipate a direct continuation, while newcomers might assume it is required before they can understand the next numbered novel. The cleaner label is companion collection. Book Four remains the next main continuation, with its title and publication date not established by the verified series information used here.

Why a perspective shift changes the reading experience

The Empyrean novels do not treat knowledge as neutral. Who understands a rule, withholds an explanation or misreads another person can matter as much as an external event. Violet’s viewpoint gives the continuing novels their main narrative spine, so readers encounter uncertainty from a deliberately limited position.

Companion material changes that relationship. Returning to significant moments through other riders can illuminate private motives or show how differently two people understand the same institution. That does not make the companion stories disposable, but it gives them a different function: they broaden interpretation rather than carry the central plot forwards.

Threshing itself is an especially revealing frame for that approach. Without discussing any outcome, the occasion joins personal choice, institutional pressure and the bond between rider and dragon. A collection of thirteen such stories can explore how a shared rite becomes a radically different turning point for each person. Its value is likely to lie in contrast: not what happens next, but how earlier choices look when the narrative camera moves.

This is also why exact placement deserves caution. A story set earlier can still assume knowledge published later. Chronology alone cannot reveal whether a passing reference, character selection or changed perspective presupposes Iron Flame or Onyx Storm. The publication-order recommendation respects that possibility without pretending the unread collection has already been audited.

The safest placement before and after publication

As of 19 September 2026, Threshing Day is scheduled for 29 September 2026. Before publication, the conservative recommendation for a new reader is Fourth Wing, its bonus chapters, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm and then Threshing Day. This follows the public release sequence and ensures that every currently published main novel has supplied its information first.

After publication, the collection can be assessed story by story. It may turn out that every entry is comfortable immediately after Fourth Wing, that some assume knowledge from Iron Flame, or that the whole collection works best after Onyx Storm. Until the text establishes that boundary, any more precise interleaving would be speculation.

Established readers who have completed Onyx Storm need not solve a chronology puzzle: they can approach Threshing Day on release as a return to formative moments. New readers should keep the two lanes visiblenumbered novels for forward motion, companion material for added perspective. That small distinction prevents most of the confusion surrounding the title.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct Empyrean reading order?

Read Fourth Wing first, followed by Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. Those are officially Books One, Two and Three. The Fourth Wing bonus chapters can be read after Fourth Wing, while Threshing Day should be treated separately as a companion collection.

Should I read the Fourth Wing bonus chapters in numerical order?

Yes. After finishing Fourth Wing, read the official extras as chapters 9, 16 and 27. Waiting until the end of the novel preserves the original reading experience while keeping the bonus perspectives in their natural internal order.

Is Threshing Day the fourth Empyrean book?

No. It is a thirteen-story companion collection revisiting riders’ threshing experiences, including Xaden’s. The official description specifically distinguishes it from the continuation after Onyx Storm. Book Four remains a separate future main novel.

Can I read Threshing Day immediately after Fourth Wing?

That cannot yet be recommended with certainty. Its premise returns to earlier events, but an earlier setting does not guarantee freedom from references to Iron Flame or Onyx Storm. For a spoiler-conscious first read, place it after Onyx Storm until the published collection can be assessed.

Are the bonus chapters and Threshing Day essential?

They are not part of the numbered route required to follow the continuing plot. Read them if you want additional viewpoints and character context; skip or postpone them if you prefer to remain entirely within the forward-moving novels.

The simplest rule is to separate continuation from reconsideration. Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm move the central story forwards in that order. The Fourth Wing bonus chapters revisit material from the first novel and belong after it. Threshing Day revisits formative experiences across the wider cast, so it belongs in the companion lanenot in Book Four’s place. For now, reading it after Onyx Storm is the safest spoiler-free choice; its exact long-term position should be confirmed from the published collection rather than inferred from its setting.
